Embrasser un arbre, embrasser le temps | EMMANUELLE HUYNH

We are pleased to invite you all next Monday August 2nd, amidst the secular olive trees of XFARM to assist to the intimate performance of French artist Emmanuelle Huynh, part of his project “Embrasser un arbre, embrasser le temps” and final restitution of a week-long artistic residence on the confiscated lands and olive groves in San Vito dei Normanni.

After a week of research, rehearsals and deep study of the olive trees, their forms, their history, throughout several meetings with the people who live and work these lands, Emmanuelle Huynh will represent in her dance and gestures all the fragments of lives, experiences, relations and stories of these monumental trees, in order to embrace and salute their energy which have crossed time so far to meet us now.

“In 2020, I started a cycle, without knowing it.

In February then, I danced water and trees in Vietnam.

At the edge of the Gulf of Thailand on the island of Phu Quoc, I fanned out in the China Sea.

In Ho-chi-Minh City at the Botanical Garden and in the Park near the Reunification Palace, I embraced the flamboyant trees, the only witnesses of my father’s departure without return on a liner for Marseille in 1950.

In July of that same year, I spoke with the conifers of Semnoz and the stumps of this valley.

I will meet the thousand-year-old olive trees of Puglia in July 2021.

These monumental trees, with multiple and sculptural trunks, call to salute their power to have crossed time. They are now weakened by a bacterium, naturally present in them, but which – with global warming – devours and destroys them little by little.”
